Galkayo, Somalia (HOL) - At least three people have been killed while six others were wounded in two successive mine blasts in the city of Galkayo, about 750 kilo meters north of the capital Mogadishu, officials confirmed here on Tuesday.

The city’s Mayor of the Puntland side Ahmed Ali Salad who talked to the media condemned the brutal attacks which he said were used for remote controlled land mines. The Mayor noted that the blasts caused casualties on innocent civilians.

“On the behalf of the administration I send our heart-felt condolence to the families who lost their beloved members in such cowardly attacks and I also wish sudden recovery for those wounded in the blasts” the Mayor Ahmed Ali Said told the media during a press conference at the GMC hospital where the wounded people are being treated.

The blasts occurred along the main road linking between the QMC hospital and the Barwaqo market, north of the city.

For his part, the director of the QMC hospital Dr. Ahmed Diriye Sugulle said that a child was one of the three people killed in Tuesday’s mine blasts in Galkayo. “Six people with different injuries have been admitted to the hospital and they are now in a good condition” Dr. Sugulle told the media.

No group has yet claimed for the responsibility of Tuesday’s mine blasts in the north of Galkayo which are the first of such attacks reported in the region since Puntland elected new leader earlier in the month.
