The African Union peace keeping Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) has launched a high profile capacity building training course for members from the Somali correction troops known here as  "Ciidanka Asluubta" as part of AU’s efforts to help Somali government establish well-experienced prison officers.

At least 25 top officers are taking part in the AU training course which is being held at heavily guarded AMISOM’s main centre at Halane compound, south west of the capital Mogadishu. The course was launched on Thursday in the presence of top officials from UNODC, AU and Somali government.

During the course, Somali officers will be taught lessons relating to the human rights act implementation at prisons and the proper ways to treat with prisoners before and after sentences.

The training course is being held under the cooperation by AMISOM and the United Nations office on Drugs and Crime which is helping Somalia in terms of creating a better treatment and human rights act implementation at prisons across the country.

The commander of Somali correction troops, Brigadier General Hussein Hassan who addressed at the launching ceremony of the course said that Somalia was very grateful to UNODC and the AU mission in Somalia for their efforts to enhance the knowledge and experience of the country’s security services.

In Somalia, the correction troops are those responsible for maintaining high quality prison standards at jails across the war-ravaged country where the living standards of prisoners are very poor.

Last year, the Somali correction troops themselves, unveiled that some prisoners died at Mogadishu’s central custody due to lack of proper health care system as several died of cholera outbreak at the central prison.
