Firm tackling Somali piracy expecting £12m turnover

A security firm which works to tackle Somali piracy on ships is expecting a turnover of more than £12million – two years after it was founded.

Port2Port Maritime Ltd is headquartered in Manchester but also has offices in Singapore, Korea, Nigeria and Ghana.

The company specialises in the global shipping and offshore oil and gas industries and works 'tirelessly' for the security of seafarers, vessels, platforms and cargoes.

Managing Director Andrew Varney said Port2Port employs 30 full time staff globally, with the majority based in Manchester.

More than 120 specialist security consultants - ex-Royal Marine contractors - also deliver the firm's services across the globe.

Mr Varney said: “I am incredibly pleased with Port2Port's achievements in the two years since formation. The business has grown year on year and has taken a lot of hard work from everyone in the company.

“The security of seafarers, vessels, platforms and cargoes is our business and we work tirelessly to deliver a highly professional service to our customers.

“Somali Piracy may have abated recently, but globally the problem remains, where maritime crime exists to threaten the safe movement of goods and offshore operations.”

Mr Varney said that he founded Port2Port in 2011 and his company is also a supporter of the Manchester University Intern Programme, with six individuals in the company who joined as interns now employed full time.

He added: “We have recently opened an office in Singapore, a key hub to world trade shipping. After enjoying a turnover of $12m in 2012/13 and growth exceeding 45 per cent this year we forecast sales of $20m (around £12m) by year end March 2014.

“My focus over the next 12 months is to consolidate our regional presence across the Indian Ocean basin, Africa and Asia to increase market share through continued adherence to international standards for compliance in the delivery of risk management services.”

Most of the 120 ex-Royal Marine contractors travel to their training destination point via Manchester airport, which is the reason the company's headquarters sit in Manchester.

Mr Varney said: “The task of moving highly trained maritime security specialists, with the correct equipment and appropriate insurances, visas and licenses to embark and disembark vessels and platforms as they operate in the world’s high risk areas is complex.

“But we achieve this through careful application of established procedures and diligent selection of our staff and specialist security personnel, to ensure that our product is discreet, legally compliant and robust from beginning to end.”
