I am safe and sound: says Somali President

Rumours on the health status of President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud went viral on social networks

Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mahmoud has ended speculation about his health status. Rumors began circulating earlier in the week about his health with some websites reporting that he was in critical condition while others claiming he had died on Wednesday.

“I want to tell the Somali people that I am safe and sound, the misleading reports that I died or I was admitted to a hospital in Turkey were meant to destabilize the country’s security,” President Hassan Sheik Mahmoud said later on Wednesday.

Speaking to the state-run Radio Mogadishu via phone from Turkey, the president said that he went to Turkey on an unofficial visit to meet his family members and will return to the capital Mogadishu on Saturday 15th of February.

“I came here to visit my family. I went through a general health check-up and there is nothing critical about my condition. The Somali people should know those fueling this kind of news are working for terrorists such as al-Shabab,’’said Mr Mohamud.

The Information Minister Mustaf Sheik Ali Dhuhulow told the media that the government will investigate to find out who was exactly behind these rumors.
