A senior al-Shabaab operative accused of plotting assassinations of Somali journalists has been in the custody of Somalia's National Security and Intelligence Agency for about a week, Radio Mogadishu reported Tuesday (December 9th).
Hassan Haji Hanafi, a journalist by training, is accused of plotting the killing of fellow Somali journalists. He was arrested in Nairobi's Eastleigh neighbourhood in August and the Somali government requested his extradition.
The Kenyan government's role in extraditing Hanafi is unclear, but Somali Ministry of National Security spokesperson Mohamed Yusuf Osman said Hanafi has been in custody for about a week and will soon be brought to justice.
Hanafi was reportedly injured in clashes in Lower Shabelle region, and was treated for "battle like" injuries in Kenya, Somalia's Ambassador to Kenya Mohammed Ali Nur told Sabahi in August.
