LEWISTON -- The Lewiston Public Library will present a two-part series entitled "One City, Many Stories" on the first two Fridays in May. The series opens at 7 p.m. Friday, May 2, in the Library’s Callahan Hall with Somali storyteller and poet Farah Mohamed.

Mohamed is an author, graphic novelist, and poet who writes in both English and his native Somali. As a storyteller he tells traditional tales from Somalia which for centuries were transferred orally from generation to generation.

In his LPL performance Mohamed will be sharing his poetry along with a range of stories, some traditional and others re-written for a new generation of Somali-Americans. He will be telling stories in both Somali and English in this free, family-friendly show for all ages.

The second "One City, Many Stories" event will take place at 7 p.m. Friday, May 9, and will feature storyteller and musician Michael Parent, a Lewiston native of French-Canadian descent. Parent has performed as a storyteller and singer in both English and French, throughout the United States, and beyond, since 1977.

Parent’s performance will feature a mixture of stories, songs, and vignettes which provide a window into the Franco-American experience. He will be joined on stage by Maine fiddler extraordinaire Greg Boardman.

Both of these "One City, Many Stories" events are free and open to the public. For more information, call 207-513-3135 or [email protected].
