MUSLIM youths in Majengo, Mombasa rioted
yesterday and on Thursday evening over the arrest of a cleric. Sheikh
Ramadhan Juma, a Tanzanian national, is being accused of radicalising
Muslim youth and encouraging them to join al Shabaab militants in
Somalia.
He was arrested by police officers outside the Masjid Musa mosque
after Isha prayers at around 8.30pm. Police sources said Sheikh Juma was
profiled as having links with the terror group after he arrived in the
country from Tanzania.
He is viewed as the successor of the slain Sheikh Ibrahim Ismael, who
took over from the deceased Sheikh Aboud Rogo. Both Sheikh Ismael and
Sheikh Rogo were assassinated in Mombasa in drive-by shootings by
unknown gunmen.
Sheikh Juma was by the time of going to press still being held at
Port police station. He was being interrogated by anti-terrorism police
officers.
