The recent attack on Kenya's Westgate shopping mall that left 67 people dead had exposed the difficulty in fighting al-Shabab fighters, who are based in Somalia.
African Union troops, who are at the frontline of the war with the armed group in Somalia, face an uphill struggle to land a final blow against it.
AU military officials say they need more troops and resources in order to defeat the group.
Al Jazeera's Peter Greste reports from Kismayo in southern Somalia.
