Zambia, who were African champions only last year, were yesterday held to a 1-1 draw by Tanzania in a thrilling Cecafa Senior Challenge Cup match in Machakos town.
Zambia were the first to open the score card through Ronald Kampapa in the 40th minute of the first half. Tanzania replied five minutes later through Hussein Said, who headed home a corner kick to earn his team the equaliser.
The match started on a high note with both teams hunting for early goals, which was characterised by missed chances. Tanzania came into the match in the second half forcefully but failed to utilise the chances that came their way. Zambia were forced to make three changes in a bid to up their game, but this failed to yield the desired results.
The former Africa champions would have scored a second goal through Felix Katonga whose powerful header from corner kick was saved by hawk-eyed Tanzania goalkeeper Mapunda Philip. Festus Ndewe of Zambia sent a hard shot from outside the box but missed the target by inches.
Tanzania strikers pushed Zambia into their own half with Maguli Mrugau and Ramadhan Kiemba terrorising the Zambia goalmouth. It is the first time that Machakos County is hosting an international football competition.
Thousands of fans thronged the stadium to catch a glimpse of international football despite a heavy downpour that threatened to paralyse the matches. Defending champions Uganda will play Rwanda at the same venue today at 4pm while Sudan will host Eritrea from 2pm. Meanwhile, Burundi opened their Group B matches with a 2-0 win over underdogs Somalia at the Kenyatta Stadium in Machakos yesterday.
