Major General Geoffrey Baraba Maheesi of
Uganda, who has been appointed as deputy force commander of the African
Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM), arrived in Somalia Tuesday night
(November 26th), Uganda's Daily Monitor reported.
Muheesi is taking up his post at a time when 24 Ugandan soldiers were suspended in September for allegedly selling on the black market food intended for AMISOM troops. Commander of the Ugandan contingent Brigadier Michael Ondoga was among those suspended.
"I will fight every battle to restore the dignity of the [Uganda People's Defence Force] in Somalia, mistakes have been made but we shall correct them," Maheesi said.
"I know the task ahead is not easy but my track record is clear and I am not associated with mistakes. I will leave Somalia better than I found it," he said.
