Efforts to revive business operations within the precincts of Westgate Shopping Mall on Saturday received a major boost with the reopening of the busy Mwanzi road, which cuts through Westgate Shopping Mall and Ukay Centre.

At least 68 people lost their lives and 200 others wounded after the Al-Qaeda-linked Al Shabaab militants attacked the Nairobi shopping mall on September 21, this year.

The road, which had been sealed off to facilitate forensic investigations, connects Ring Road Parklands and Peponi roads while providing access to the key Ukay and Westgate parking lots.

Commenting on the new developments, Nakumatt Holdings Managing Director Atul Shah said the business operators had successfully managed to petition for the reopening of the key road to facilitate business recovery.

“The continued closure of the road had contributed to a business slump for traders within the Westgate Shopping mall vicinity but I am glad the opening will now provide a much needed relief,” Shah said.

“The opening of Mwanzi road this morning provides Ukay Centre patrons with a convenient entry and exit option alongside ample parking facilities at the three parking lots along Mwanzi road,” he added.

Two months into the Westgate terrorist attack, most traders are still counting their losses.

The traders had however commenced plans to rebuild their businesses following last week’s handover of the Westgate Shopping Mall building back to the property developer from the security agencies.
