UAE pledges USD 50 million in assistance to Somalia

The UAE undertook to provide AED183 million (US$ 50) million to support the Republic of Somalia. The UAE's Minister of Development and International Cooperation, Shaikha Lubna bint Khalid Al-Qassimi, announced the UAE's support during inauguration of the International Conference on Somalia in favor of the African Union (AU)'s peacekeeping mission and to help Somalia tackle its own challenges and build its own institutions so as to ensure a brighter future and lay down rigorous foundations for peace and stability.
the conference, Shaikha Lubna Al-Qassimi cited positive and promising accomplishments in terms of electing a new lawful government in Somalia, led by President Hassan Sheikh Mahmoud, and its taking of major steps in collaboration with the international community which culminated in amelioration of the security situation in the war-ravaged country.

The UAE Minister of Development and International Cooperation who participated in the said conference cited in her speech a recent visit of a high-profile UAE official delegation to the Republic of Somalia and exploration of aspects and means for developing infrastructures in various fields to enable Somalia build a modern state capable of self-reliance upon its own resources.
The UAE has contributed US$ 60 million in humanitarian assistance, foodstuffs, potable water supplies, housing, education, Somali magistrates' training and development projects which boosted Somalia's stability over the past four years.
The International Conference on Somalia was inaugurated by British PM David Cameron in London yesterday in which high-profile representatives from 50 countries participated in order to boost security and stability in Somalia, increase assistance and show international support to the Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mahmoud who was elected last year.
