Nasra Moumin of Campbell Collegiate, Regina, Saskatchewan has earned her place as one of the best debaters in Canada over the last three years. Her success began in 2011 when she and her partner, Areeb Salim became the first team from Saskatchewan to ever win the Junior National Debate Championships. She also took the award for the top speaker at the tournament. In her grade ten year, she set another record by being a part of the youngest team to ever make it to the finals at the Senior National Debate Championships. This year, they brought great pride back to Saskatchewan by winning Senior Nationals.
Internationally, Nasra has also achieved great success. In grade 9, she attended the Pan-American Debate Championships and was 2nd individually and 6th as a team. The following year, she made the Canadian national debate team and competed at the Heart of Europe Debate Tournament in Czech Republic. In January 2013, she debated on behalf of Team Canada at the World Schools Debating Championships in Antalya, Turkey. Next year, she will be the captain of Team Canada at the 2014 World Championships in Thailand.
The National Debate Championships is the recognized Canadian championship tournament for junior and senior high school debaters. Competitors are selected by their provincial associations, usually at Provincial Championships. The tournament host rotates around the country.
The National Championships were started in 1998 by Sydney Academy in partnership with debate associations and schools from Manitoba, Nova Scotia, Quebec, Ontario and Saskatchewan. Since then, the Championships has become recognized as the top competition in Canada each year.
