Washington, DC – U.S. Senator Amy Klobuchar issued the following statement for Somalia Independence Day on July 1st:

“I am honored to join Minnesota’s Somali community in celebrating the 53rd anniversary of Somalia’s independence from Great Britain and Italy.

I am proud to represent the state that is home to the largest Somali population in the United States. Minnesota’s Somali community represents a unique and noble heritage that has strengthened the cultural and economic vitality of our state. They are our entrepreneurs, our religious leaders, our teachers, and most importantly, they are our neighbors, coworkers and friends.

The Somali people in 1960 realized the same dream of independence as the American colonies in 1776. Today, the fight for freedom and democracy in Somalia continues, and I remain committed to working with Minnesota’s Somali community to promote policies that move the region and Somalia forward.

As we celebrate Somalia’s Independence Day, let us also look to the future and work towards a peaceful and prosperous Somalia.”
