The Inspector-General of Police (IG), Mohammed Abubakar, Wednesday met
with state commissioners of police and other top officers to deliberate
on the state of emergency in three northern states and roll out new
strategies to combat terrorism.
At the meeting which was held at the Force Headquarters in Abuja other
issues also discussed were crime challenges facing each state command,
level of investigation into terrorist-related cases, bribery and
corruption in the Police Force and the training of police personnel for
improved service delivery.
Abubakar who addressed the participants before the meeting commenced,
said the parley would review strategies against kidnapping and armed
robbery, internal conflicts and cross-border crisis in different parts
of the country.
He expressed frustration over the payment of ransom to kidnappers by
family of kidnapped victims, noting that the security forces do not
always know when payments are made to abductors in most cases.According
to him, the police would have easily resolved most kidnapped cases but
for the poor telecommunications system in the country which affects the
police tracking system, saying the police would continue to improve on
its service delivery to Nigerians as he solicited for public support.
“This meeting was called to review our strategies on the various
security challenges in the country like internal conflicts, armed
robbery, kidnapping and other violent crimes as well as border
crisis-internal and external borders. We will look at the challenges
being faced by each state command and come up with strategies to check
them,” the IG said.
Earlier Abubakar had received the police contingent that served on a
peace-keeping operation in Somalia and earned commendation for their
distinguished service.
