UNITED NATIONS, July 30 (UPI) -- Terrorist attacks in Mogadishu will not deter the international efforts to rebuild the government of Somalia, the U.N. secretary-general said.
Somalia terrorist group al-Shabaab claimed responsibility for the suicide bombing of the Turkish Embassy in Mogadishu. One person was dead and three others were injured in the Saturday attack.
U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon issued a statement through his spokesman condemning the attack. He said Turkey is working "under very difficult circumstances" to help prop up the government in Mogadishu.
Somalia last year formed its first functioning central government since the 1990s. It has struggled to extend its control beyond Mogadishu because of al-Shabaab's influence and separatist campaigns from eastern coastal regions.
"Terrorist attacks of this nature should not deter Somalia's partners or weaken their resolve to stand by the people and government of Somalia as they work courageously to build peace in their country," Ban's statement said Monday.
The U.N. Security Council issued a statement condemning the attack in the strongest terms.
"The members of the Security Council reaffirmed their continued support for the political process and for peace and stability in Somalia," it said.
