Columbus firefighters use the Jaws of Life on a Chevrolet Impala following an accident Monday evening at the intersection of Lost Creek Parkway and 48th Avenue.

Two Schuyler women were seriously injured when the vehicle they were in was struck by a semitrailer Monday evening on Lost Creek Parkway.

According to the Columbus Police Department, 25-year-old Naimo Buluf and 32-year-old Berika Tahiro were hospitalized following the 5:13 p.m. crash at the intersection of the parkway and 48th Avenue.

The women were transported by ambulance to Columbus Community Hospital and later flown to BryanLGH Medical Center West in Lincoln. They were both in the intensive care unit Tuesday, but their conditions were not released.

Buluf was driving a Chevrolet Impala south on 48th Avenue when she crossed the parkway in front of an eastbound semitrailer driven by 64-year-old Ronald Cook of Lincoln, according to a Columbus Police release. The semi struck the passenger side of the Impala and both vehicles left the roadway, stopping at the bottom of the south embankment just east of the intersection.

Columbus firefighters used the Jaws of Life to free at least one of the women from the Impala.

Cook was treated and released from Columbus Community Hospital. He was driving a vehicle from Gana Trucking & Excavating Inc. of Martell.

It’s not known whether seat belts were in use at the time of the accident, which is still under investigation.

The Nebraska State Patrol and Platte County Sheriff’s Office also assisted at the scene.
