Puntland accuses Alshabab of killing a prominent Shiekh in Garowe

Somalia’s semiautonomous region of Puntland has accused Alshabab militants of carrying out the assassination of a prominent Islamic scholar Shiekh Abdukadir Nur Farah.

He was shot dead in Garowe,the administrative town of Puntland, while he was praying in a Mosque.

Puntland’s president Abdirahman Mohamed Farole has blamed the attack on Alshabab and called the people of Puntland to cooperate closely with the security forces to tackle the increasing insecurity in the region.

“Alshabab was behind the assassination of Shiekh Abdukadir and they will be held responsible for this”. Said the president.

“The assailant was arrested at the scene, and he is in the hands of the security forces” he added.

Witnesses in Garowe say 19 years old Abdirahman bile was arrested by mob, while he was trying to flee from the scene.

Puntland has witnessed continued attacks on prominent religious,social and political leaders in the past few years.

Authorities blame these attacks on the islamist militants, who are fighting government and Amisom troops in the south of the country.
