A family is mourning after the killing of an administration policeman by Al Shaabab militia.

Corporal David Muchira, 40, was among four officers shot dead during a raid at an AP post in Garissa on Friday last week.

The insurgents opened fire on the officers, killing them instantly before setting the post on fire.

Soon after the attack, soldiers were dispatched to Garissa to pursue the suspects.

COME TO TERMS

On Monday, family members at Gitondo village in Kirinyaga county were trying to come to terms with his death.

The officer's son Albert Munene, 15, said: "I was at home in the evening when the sad news of the raid was broadcast by FM radios.

"It was then that I knew the worst had happened as my father was based at the AP post which had been attacked."

Munene, a form one student at Kimunye Day Secondary School said his father had planned to transfer him to another school but now his dreams have been shattered.

THREE CHILDREN

"He had told me that he was working hard to look for me a high school where I can get good education but now he is gone," he said.

Corporal Muchira has left behind a widow and three children; Munene, Brian Muthii, 6, and Victor Macharia, 9.

He joined the police force in September 1995 and worked in Kitui, Nairobi and Wajir areas before relocation to Garissa.

According to his brother Peterson Kimunya, the officer was killed one week after returning to work.

BURIAL PLANS

He had spent time most of his time at home during his annual leave.

The family said preparations for the burial, scheduled for Friday this week, are on going and the body has already been flown to Nairobi from Garissa.

He urged the government to ensure that those who killed the officers face the law.
