Chairman of the Somali Islamic Scholars
Council Sheikh Bashir Ahmed Salad survived an assassination attempt in
Mogadishu on Monday (April 8th), Somalia's RBC Radio reported.
A bomb exploded inside Salad's car as the cleric was driving to his
office in Hodan neighbourhood. No one was hurt in the explosion. Salad
blamed al-Shabaab for the attack, adding that the militant group has
assassinated many clerics. "We know why they are targeting us because of
telling the right religion to the people," he said.
Council spokesperson Sheikh Nur Barud Gurhan called on al-Shabaab to
cease targeting innocent Somalis. The council also called on all
al-Shabaab members to surrender their arms and join the peace process.
