Somali Prime Minister Abdi Farah Shirdon has
appointed Mohamed Abdi Kalil as interim governor of the Gedo region for
six months, the prime minister's office announced Monday (April 1st).
"The new administration is responsible to improve the security
situation and work with the federal government on delivering the
much-needed social services," Shirdon said during a visit to Garbaharey,
the regional capital. "Good leadership and a stable security situation
will lead the way to a better future and sustainable development in this
region."
Minister of Interior and National Security Abdikarim Hussein Guled
also appointed five members of the Garbaharey district administration.
The administration run by the pro-government militia Ahlu Sunna wal
Jamaa in southwest regions of the country also signed an agreement with
the federal government to integrate its fighters into the Somali
National Army.
"I am glad to announce that you are officially accepted as part of
the Somali National Army, you will have equal rights and
responsibilities," Shirdon said at a military base in Garbaharey. "Your
mission is to secure our national borders and defeat enemies of peace,
those threatening our national security and progress."
