A grenade attack on a Christian community in eastern Kenya, which killed one person and injured at least 10 others, was motivated by political rather than religious concerns, according to a local Catholic bishop.

Bishop Joseph Alessandro said that the attack occurred during an inter-faith service held at a police station in Garissa. The police chaplain, who was leading the service, was killed. “The objective seems to be the police,” the bishop said.

The Islamic group Shabaab, based in nearby Somalia, is suspected of carrying out the bombing. Shabaab has conducted a series of terrorist activities in eastern Kenya, in retaliation for the involvement of Kenyan troops in efforts to suppress the Islamic militants in Somalia.
