GARISSA, Kenya, May 30 (Xinhua) -- Four Kenyan policemen were wounded Tuesday in an ambush by suspected Somali gunmen in the restive frontier region bordering war-ravaged Somalia, authorities said Wednesday.

The incident occurred in Dadaab district when a police unit was on its way back to base after escorting a bus it had rescued from armed bandits to a nearby town, said regional police commander Leo Nyongesa.

Armed Somali bandits were suspected to be behind the attack, Nyongesa said, noting that those attempting to hijack the bus were also believed to come from Somalia.

The injured officers were taken to hospital, among whom one had been discharged and three others were expected to be flown to Nairobi for special treatment, he said.

Kenya's border region with Somalia has been haunted by bandits, who often hijack buses shuttling between local cities. Local security forces have started providing escort services for motorists.

Following a series of abductions and attacks blamed on Al-Shabaab, a Somalia-based major terrorist group, Kenya has responded with military actions in the past few months.
