The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) today condemned the shooting incident in which a radio journalist was shot and seriously wounded by unidentified men in Mogadishu (Somalia).

"We are concerned with the escalation of violent attacks against journalists in Somalia since the beginning of the year. We urge Government to tackle the problem so that journalists can work in safe environment," said Gabriel Baglo, IFJ Africa Director.

According to National Union of Somali Journalists (NUSOJ), an IFJ affiliate, Mohamed Nur Mohamed known as Sharifka, a journalist working for UN funded radio Bar Kulan , was shot twice in the stomach and the chest in Mogadishu's Hamar Jajab District on the evening of 8 June by unidentified men while he was on his way home in Waberi District. He was seriously wounded but taken to hospital where he was successfully treated.

"We condemn this wanton violence against Mohamed Nur Mohamed who only wanted to pursue a career in journalism," said Omar Faruk Osman, NUSOJ Secretary General. "Authorities must be sincere in their fight to bring the war on journalists to an end."
