Juba Vision, a humanitarian organization, will host a conference in central Minnesota this weekend to raise money to build a school in southern Somalia. The group says the school will cost between $15,000 and $20,000.
Mohamud Ali, who works with the group, says the aim of the organization is to provide the people of southern Somalia with access to education, clean water and health care.
"We're trying to help those people who are helpless in Somalia," Ali says. "As you know, Somalia has had a problem. The famine last year killed thousands of children and women. You know, we have to learn from that mistake that we live in the 21st century. No one should die because there's no food."
Ali says all community members are welcome. They hope to raise some of the money at this weekend's event and will offer lunch as well as comments from guest speakers.
The conference will be held at the River's Edge Convention Center in St. Cloud starting at noon Saturday and at 10 a.m. Sunday.
