Major security operations have been launched in the North Eastern Province.

Provincial commissioner James ole Serian said the operations have been launched in Garissa, Wajir and Mandera towns and that there would be a meeting in Garissa involving the local leaders.

Some people who talked to the Nation on condition of anonymity said that immediately after the blasts, some Somali youth were seen celebrating within the town.

Residents feared that the attacks could trigger other conflicts but the PC allayed any fears saying that the situation was under control.

“The town is calm and there is no tension,” he said on Sunday night.

Another security meeting will be held this morning in Nairobi for a massive operation in the area.

Police spokesman Eric Kiraithe said that following the intelligence reports, police were planning a major operation on Monday morning to recover the stolen police firearms and to apprehend the attackers whose motive was still unclear.

All officers assigned guard duties at churches had been warned to be alert and to keep vigil.

Both officers were shot in the head and their bodies lay about two metres apart. The police also want to establish how the hooded attackers could make their way the officers.
