Kenya: I'm Qualified to Head Land Commission, Says Khalif

Abdulkadir Adan Khalif has declared that he is qualified to serve on the National Land Commission. Khalif, who appeared for vetting before Lands and Natural Resources parliamentary committees yesterday, said he has a wealth of experience on land matters. He denied he had any links with Somalia politics but said his clan extends to the neighbouring war-torn country.

Khalif, whose nomination has been rejected by President Kibaki but supported by Prime Minister Raila Odinga, told the committee that 90 per cent of people in Mandera are from his clan. "I have never been interrogated or summoned for any interrogation. If there have been any investigations about me, then I am not aware," he said.

The committee, chaired by Gachoka MP Mutava Musyimi, earlier met with representatives of Kibaki and Raila over the row surrounding the nomination of Khalif. The committee met Caroli Omondi from the Prime Minister's office and Kivutha Kibwana from Office of the President. On July 13 2012 the acting Head of Public Service and Secretary to the Cabinet Francis Kimemia wrote to Parliament seeking to replace Khalif with a Mohamed AW.
