The Somali man charged after being shot by police last month has again been excused from appearing in court.

The man, who has name suppression, is charged with attempting to a murder a council worker and stabbing a woman after dramatic violence at the intersection of Halswell and Hoon Hay Roads.

He's currently being assessed by psychiatrists in Hillmorton Hospital and was due to appear in court today.

However, his lawyer Alister Davis has asked for the case to be remanded for two weeks so the psychiatric report could be completed, telling the court the man is likely to be in the hospital for a long time.
