A team of Anti-Terrorism Police Unit officers has been dispatched to conduct security surveillance in North Rift region following influx of refugees from South Sudan.A source at the unit told The Standard the team has pitched tent in Kitale, Kapenguria and Kakuma towns to monitor the movement of foreigners.
The detectives arrived in the region last week and have since carried out surveillance for possible existence of Al Shabaab activities.
"The team has been in the region to probe alleged existence of some Al Shabaab fighters and are satisfied that there is no such activity," a source told The Standard.
Hundreds of Sudanese nationals fleeing their country due to insecurity, hunger and tribal clashes have been crossing to Kenya in the recent months prompting the Government to intensify security surveillance.
fighter in militia
Turkana West DC Patrick Mwiriira said over 150 Sudanese flock to Kakuma refugee camp daily.
By last month, over 4,500 Sudanese had been registered by humanitarian organisations at the camp.
The camp hosts over 90,000 displaced people from various countries in the horn of Africa, especially from the war-torn Somalia.
Meanwhile, police are looking for a Kenyan man who claimed to be an Al Shabaab fighter.
The 30-year-old man who hails from Trans-Nzoia County last week surrendered to police in Nairobi claiming he had returned to the country from Somalia where he had been recruited as a fighter in the militia group. Police sources said the man has since disappeared after officers dropped him at his Kwanza home prompting the manhunt.
out to lie
Evans Wafula alias Yusuf Juma has been under surveillance for two weeks after detectives travelled back with him to his rural home to probe his alleged connection to Al Shabaab.
"The detectives returned to the man’s homes but they could not find him. He is said to have fled to Uganda," said a source.
Police sources said detectives had information that the man was an impostor and was out to lie to get protection money from Government.
