Community health services in the Wellington region are facing funding cuts in the latest round of cost saving measures from the Capital and Coast District Health Board.

The news has left the Wellington Somali Council devastated, with officials saying the cut of $100, 000 may see the service close down.

For eight years the council has opened its doors to around 2000 refugees, offering housing, health and language support.

"We have been told our funding has been cut. And it's very devastating news for our communities who've been working very hard to be part of society," Adam Awad, of the Wellington Somali Council told ONE News.

"Without this service these women will stay longer to the welfare system, longer in the state houses and will cost a lot to the taxpayers."

The DHB told ONE News it cut the council's funding for specific social work services because it needs to be targeting front line health and reducing hospital admissions.

However, the DHB has agreed to extend the contract by three months to give the council time to seek money from others.

ONE News understands other community health services within the Wellington region also face funding cuts, including Maori and Pacific health services, along with mental health providers and medical centres.

One service alone is set to lose more than a $1 million.
