NAIROBI
(Reuters) - Kenyan police have arrested five people including a Syrian and a Yemeni national over their ties to Somalia's al Shabaab rebels, which claims links to al Qaeda, a police source said on Tuesday.

The suspects, who the source said were arrested along the east African country's Indian Ocean coast in Malindi and Lamu towns over the weekend, have not yet been charged in court.

It was not immediately clear when or whether this was likely to happen.

"The suspects, including a Syrian and Yemeni national, have been arrested for their role in boosting the recruitment of al Shabaab militia," said a senior anti-terrorism police officer who declined to be named.

"They have been transferred to Nairobi for further questioning by anti-terrorism personnel."

Twice hit by al Qaeda, Kenya is wary of its lawless neighbour and warned last month that al Shabaab planned to strike heavily populated areas during the Easter holidays.

Kenyan authorities later said they were hunting three individuals suspected of planning to carry out suicide bombings.

Al Shabaab insurgents, who are battling Somalia's western-backed government, control swathes of central and southern Somalia, which has not had an effective government since the 1991 overthrow of dictator.
