Refugees have been coming to Wisconsin for more than a decade but in the last year, the population of refugees in Green Bay has grown very fast.
In the Green Bay school district for example, last year there were 18 Somali students. This year, there are more than 200.
FOX 11 On Special Assignment reporter Robert Hornacek took a closer look at why the refugees are coming to northeast Wisconsin.
"What is it about Green Bay that is an attractive place to be?" we asked Firdosa Hussein, a Somali refugee who moved to Green Bay earlier this year. She was born in Somalia but was raised in Minneapolis and New York.
"If I had a penny every time I was asked that question I'd be rich," she replied. "The reason people are coming to Green Bay is the reason why everybody else is living in Green Bay. The environment is great. Educational system is absolutely wonderful. It's much safer."
Coming up tonight on FOX 11 News at Nine we'll take a closer look at the Somali community in Green Bay and why so many refugees are finding a new home here.
