Dutch marines are going to protect a United Nations ship bound for Somalia against pirates, following a decision by the Dutch government on Friday. It is the first time Dutch marines will escort a UN ship. The vessel, which is due to sail in late January, will be transporting food and aid supplies between the Kenyan city of Mombasa and several Somali ports.
The Dutch marines will remain for some six months on board the ship.
The operation is part of the Atalanta mission of the European Union.
