Woman Scientists to Receive AU Awards on 9 September

Addis Ababa 7 September 2010 – On 9 September 2010, at the Headquarters of the AU Commission in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, five excelling African woman scientists will receive distinction of excellence awards for their achievement in the field of sciences. The African Union Women Scientist Regional Award ceremony will coincide with the African Union (AU) Day, observed every 9 September all over the continent.

The African Union Commission is committed to support the popularization of science and technology among African citizens, empower them, celebrate their achievements and promote all efforts to transform scientific research into sustainable development. 

As a result the AU Commission, with support from its Development Partners, launched the prestigious African Union Scientific Award Programme in 2008. The programme is implemented at national level for young researchers, regional level for women scientists and the continental level is open to all scientists. The regional award programme is designed to enhance the participation of African women in science and acknowledging their contribution to the use of science in addressing African challenges. The programme is run by the Regional Economic Communities.
