At least eight people were killed and 18 injured in fighting in Mogadishu, Somali on Sunday according to Ali Muse, a medical official and head of the city’s ambulance service.

Sapa and Associated Press are confirming that the fighting took place between pro-government forces and Islamist militants.

Somalia has seen a huge spike in fighting over the last month as militants led by the al-Qaeda-aligned group al-Shabaab try to overrun the country's weak, United Nations-backed government.

In August Islamist militants attacked a hotel and killing more than 30 people.

Al-Shabab and another insurgent group, Hizbul Islam, want to topple the Somali government and establish a strict Islamic state. The groups have already imposed harshly conservative Islamic law in the areas under their control.

Somalia hasn't had a functioning government in almost 20 years.
