The Ministry of humanitarian Affairs and Resettlement strongly condemns the shooting that has resulted the killing of the civilian population on Tuesday the 23rd December 2010 by a contingent of AMISOM troops coming from the Mogadisho Airport.

 

In this unfortunate incident two civilian lost their lives and seven others were injured. One of the wounded civilian was hospitalized at the hospital of AMISOM peace keeping force. The other six injured civilians were brought to Medina Hospital.

 

The Minister extends his condolence to the families of those who lost their lives during the incident and wishes a sound and a quick recovery for the injured ones.  

 

The Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs acknowledges the statement of regret by the African Union commander Maj. Gen. Nathan Mugisha and appreciates the fact that all the soldiers involved have been arrested and taken into military custody while a full investigation is initiated.

In recent months, large numbers of Mogadishu residents have been wounded in the fighting between the insurgents and government army supported by the AMISOM troops.  Some very large numbers of Mogadishu residents are forced to run away from their homes.

It is the responsibilities of AMISOM to safe guard the Humanitarian interventions and the human rights of the civilian population. Therefore, the Minister encourages and emphasis that AMISOM reinforces its mandate of conducting a peace support operation in Somalia to stabilize the security situation and to create a safe and secure environment during the transitional period of the Somali government.

 

In conclusion, the Minister hopes that such an incident in which innocent civilian lives are lost or injured will not be repeated in the future.
