Maputo — The Mozambican police have arrested 97 Somali citizens in Murrupula, in the northern province of Nampula, 97 Somalis who entered Mozambique illegally.
Miguel Bartholomeu, of the public relations department of the Nampula provincial police command, cited by Radio Mozambique, said that the illegal migrants were in a truck driven by a Mozambican, who ran away when the vehicles was stopped by the police.
The Nampula police say they do not know where the Somalis were going. They have been sent to the Marratane Refugee Centre, also in Nampula.
There is a constant stream of Somalis fleeing their war-torn country, and entering Mozambique from Tanzania. Many of them are using Mozambique as a corridor in order to reach South Africa.
Several hundred have been arrested this year, but others could easily have slipped through and made their way.
