Spanish navy patrol boat 'Infanta Cristina', participtating in the EU's anti-piracy naval taskforce in the Indian Ocean (Operation Atalanta), has intercepted and sank a whaling ship that was being crewed by Somali pirates to commit criminal acts.As reported by the Ministry of Defence in a statement, the Navy patrol received an order from the command of the 'Atalanta' on Saturday morning to intercept a group of suspected pirates who were sailing the whaling ship and an additional skiff.
After detecting the two ships, the Spanish ship started their pursuit, but the skiff hove away from the whaler and fled, despite warning shots from the Spanish ship being fired.
Subsequently, marines aboard the 'Infanta Cristina' proceeded to board the whaler. Discovering that the boat was equipped to commit acts of piracy, and under the instructions of the command of the 'Atalanta', the marines proceeded to scuttle the whaler. Its four occupants were left on the Somali coast.
