A young Somali-born activist from Portland has announced his candidacy for the Legislature. Mohammed Dini says he will focus his campaign on jobs and education in his bid for House District seat 119, which repesents one of Portland's most ethnically diverse neighborhoods. Dini, who grew up in Somalia, and fled Mogadishu, first for Kenya then for the U.S., is now a U.S. citizen. He says he was inspired to run by the stories of past immigrants from other cultures."I was deeply inspired by the Irish-Americans who had a tough time, and just because of the things they went through back home, they decided to live a better life somewhere else," Dini Says. "They came to Canada, they came to this state, this city, and this country for one reason -- that's a better life."Dini faces a primary battle against fellow Democrat Jill Barkley. Two Green Party candidates, Kris Eckhardt and Christian McNeil, are also running, as is Republican Megan Sanborn.
