Mogadishu, Somalia (APA) - Ninety Somali students left for Yemen on Thursday after they were granted scholarships by the Yemeni government, Somali Higher Education Minister said.
Prof Ibrahim Hassan Addow told reporters in Mogadishu said that the Somali government was grateful to the Yemeni government for helping Somalia in the filed of education.
A big farewell ceremony was held for the student at the Prime Minister’s compound in Mogadishu late on Wednesday where Yemeni Ambassador to Somalia, top government officials, parents and some of the students delivered speeches.
Prime Minister Omar Abdirashid Sharmarke encouraged the students to study hard so that in the future they can serve their people and nation.
“Yemen holds tens of thousands of Somali refugees. We know it had already been fed up with the excessive numbers of Somalis crossing over the Gulf of Aden and it is now granting us scholarships. So we can describe Yemen as the real brother of Somalia,” Sharmarke said.
Yemen’s ambassador to Somalia, Ahmed Hamid said his government has in the past granted scholarships to Somalia and will continue to help upgrade the education of Somalis.
Egypt, Pakistan and Sudan grant yearly scholarships to thousands of Somali students with Sudan described as the biggest donor.
