SOMALI pirates have released a Greek-owned chemtanker captured in late March, Athens-based manager Lotus Shipping has confirmed to Lloyd’s List. A representative of the company said that 1997-built, 8,742 dwt Nipayia and its crew of 19 — all Filipino nationals save the Russian master — had been set free on Saturday. All the seafarers were well, he said.
While not authorised to discuss whether a ransom had been paid, he added: “We carried out the necessary actions to finish this matter successfully.”
The Panama-flagged vessel had no cargo at the time of seizure and was en route from Madagascar to the Persian Gulf at the time of the incident.
