MOGADISHU -- Gunmen shot dead a Somali radio journalist Thursday in
the town of Afgoye, 30 kilometers (18 miles) west of the capital
Mogadishu, the radio station and an eyewitness told AFP.
Hassan Mayow Hassan was gunned down on a street corner, near his home.
"It's still not sure why they killed him but they opened fire on him near his house and he died on the spot," Shabelle radio director Muktar Mohamed Hirabe said.
"I saw Hassan walking in the area and, moments later, I heard gunshots. I rushed to the site and found his body on the ground," said local resident Mohamed Sheikh.
Somalia is one of the world's most dangerous countries for journalists. Media houses have been chronically shut down by the authorities and reporters, Somali and foreign, have been routinely kidnapped by armed groups.
