Abdirahman Farole, new elected president of Puntland

Thursday January 08, 2009 (HOL) - Pundlanders have voted for a new President and Vice President today. The new President and Vice President will lead the semi autonomous region in the north east of Somalia in the next four years. 
  
 Mr. Abdirahman Faraole has been elected the President, beating second place candidate General Abdulllahi Ilka-Jiir. Mr. Abdirahman got 49 votes of the 66 of votes in the Parliament while Ilka-Jiir received 17 votes in the second round of the elections which took place in the city of Garoowe, the capital of Puntland region. 

The current President Mr. Ade Muse was also in the second round but

received only 8 votes. After the results of the elections were made public, thousand of supporters of the President-Elect came out on the streets to celebrate and show their support for the newly elected President.
 
The election of the President was followed by the election of the Vice President where Mr. Cabdisamad Ali Shire won over his rival candidate Mr. Suleiman Toosiye, marking the end of presidential election in Puntland. 
 
It is important to note that election took place democratically and without any problems, a milestone in the evolution of democracy in the region.
