"It used to be known as "territories of the Afar and Isse" after the French colonial administration realized the old name "French Somaliland" wasn't appropriate for the Afar people and other ethnic groups

Or perhaps the French realised that it was appropriate to change the name after Somalis had repeatedly declared in many votes they wanted independence from France and to join their brothers in Somalia.

It's a strategy they took from Ethiopian emperor Menelik ii, who called the Somali region in Ethiopia the Ogadeen Region, in order to stop the pan-Somalia thing that was big at that time.

If it was just to acknowledge other ethnicities, why didn't they say territories of Somalis and anfar?

Why use a clan name(Issas) for Somalis but ethnicity for the Anfars? Anfars and Somalis are two ethnicities but Issas are a Somali clan.

They didn't want to use the name Somalis it links them to their brothers in independent Somalia.

They also put the name Anfar first even though more than 60% of the population in Djibouti are Somalis.

Ethiopia wants Djibouti to join it quite badly. It would solve its access to sea problems. The current president of Djibouti is a traitor to the Somali people. He has multiple businesses in Ethiopia and has constantly sold out Djibouti for a quick buck. But as for Djibouti joining Ethiopia, total myth. My uncle who works for the Djiboutian government & says the last elections were pure fraud because nationalist won who were going to close all military bases in the country. So there are nationalist in the country who want to reunite with Somalia, except there is no strong Somalia to unite with. I guarantee a strong Somalia would convince Djbouti to reunite with it.

 Erigavo,

Lately you're mad at any and everyone including your
"brothers" in Puntland. Why are you mad these days at Somali
race particularly your beloved Puntlanders? lol

What a wonderful idea. Good luck to our brothers in Ethiopia and Djabuti.

Somali isn't even the language of learning and of government business. French and Arabic are the official ones.

Plus it's a tiny island used for military bases by the big powers. And it's ruled by a ruthless dictator who was born in Dira Dawa, Ethiopia.

Hiiraan as many other local Somali sites assume that Djibouti is synonymous with Somali state. This is a widespread misconception.
This country is home to multi ethnic groups, of which Somalis make upto 60%. It used to be known as "territories of the Afar and Isse" after the French colonial administration realized the old name "French Somaliland" wasn't appropriate for the Afar people and other ethnic groups
