BTW, if the women were asked to wear shorter skirts why they didn't opt to wear "knee length boots", since they were, in anyway, suffering the weather element by wearing heavy jalbaabs?
As for the men, they have less societal obstacles in choosing more acceptable attires.
It's not a matter of assimilation, it's common sense. We did it in Islamic Arabia, though it wasn't religiously mandated obligation!
I wish you well, brother, and accept my constructive criticism.

 Sama-fare,
Stating that someone has difficulty relating to people of different culture/religion/mindset is not an insult. Please open again your prominent dictionary and redefine the word "insult"!
I chose the name Secular as a provocation when our noble religion was used by unscrupulous cunning individuals as a ladder to gain political power. I made a comment on a social situation involving fellow countrymen facing difficulty fitting in the work place , in an environment alien to them, when you just "popped up" the "religious connotation of the controversy.

Good for you!! Praying in the Holy Haram. By the way it seems that my words has touched you!!. I only defined the meaning of your screen name according to prominent dictionaries. If you don't like your name you have the right to change it.Similarly, If you are civilized enough as you are claiming why did you close you reply with insults. I conclude to tell you Relax my friend and let's be proud of who we are.

 Wanaag-fare,
Perhaps I'm the only guy who prays in the Holy Haram at least once per month!
I am at least honest enough to avoid mixing dirty tribal/political/cultural nonsenses with religion. It won't bother me if someone like you , who can't find a civilized way to deal with people of different religion/culture, accuses/maligns  me for "abandoning" my religion and background!
I did have , in the past, similar differences with people who sound like you and it ended with  " lakum diinukum wa liya diinii"!
No hard feeling, thouhg!

 Secular=Liberal=free from values,norms,religion etc.
Our religion is protected by the first amendment, and for your information Islam has taught the world the meaning of hygiene way before the rise of public health advocates in the west.
Mr Secular, I feel sorry for you. You are Poor little guy who want to deny his roots. I urge you to come back to who you really are; A Somali Muslim who is proud of who he is and share your people to fix the other problems we have as every nation has its own problems.

"Sama-Fare",
Find a hair in a salad mix or bread, sue the restaurant and you might pocket a lump sum settlement money, but your "sisters" will loose their job, since the factory will be closed for disregarding sanitary rules!
I don't think the women are asked to wear miniskirts or to uncover their heads!
They can negotiate with the management and find a solution that pleases both sides.

 Wanaag-fare?
It looks that, wherever you live, you have no clue about the importance of hygiene & dress code in a food processing plant.
If you are proud of our traditional way of food processing I have no quarrel with you or your likes, but, here, you are anything but  a promoter of virtue (wanaag-fare) if you equate a simple health issue with "assimilation/inferiority complex" thus encouraging our brothers to insist in changing rules enshrined in the bylaws of the State where they choose, freely, to live in.
You can't possibly believe that you can enter in a bakery or kitchen wearing dusty sneakers, shuko-afgani or both!
On the other hand, given the power, I don't think you would give the "sisters" you advocate for their rights if they follow you to our motherland!
    wanaag-fare @ 6/7/2012 10:19 AM EST
Asalamu Alaykum, My fellow Countrymen,It is relatively true what is been said about this case; that we have the primary responsibility of what caused these respected sisters to be in this situation. Because, If we had solved our problems in our beloved homecounrty,we would not have suffered in all parts of the world.
However,We need to be proud of who we are as Somali Muslims and not be like the Guy who call himself as Secular and those who call for assimilation. It is Pretty clear that they are suffering from "INFERIORITY COMPLEX.Well I need to tell them that we can live in the west with out changing our Identity and be a low abiding citizens.

Misunderstandings and grievances arise when you parachute individuals from anarchic Third World countries into a modern western one where RULES must be followed.
If you cannot comply with the safety and sanitation rules choose a line of work where you can fit in , as you are (or made).
BTW, with all due respect, I wouldn't enjoy "Fine Desserts" prepared by the lot pictured in the protest photo

You will definitely run into rules that don’t exist @ all when working in warehouses. I used to work hard; two full time jobs with overtimes had no days off sometimes for months.
Went to school and got me a degree that love and certified in couple certifications, let me tell you now that I am working 9-5 job I am making way much more than when I used to kill myself.  Got more respect than before. Brothers and sisters education is the key it is never too late to learn, please educate your selves and say good bye to warehouse jobs.

May Allah helps us all and guide us to the right direction and help our brothers and sisters everywhere in this world.

Aaaaaaaaaaamin

 Pease_Lover,

Behalf of all Somali women, I say Thanks! Afkaaga cilmi, caafimaad, iyo caano lagu qabey.

I don't mean to be rude or insensitive but those maryooley in the picture look like they have just arrived in a refugee camp,  there are signs of poverty in them that show times are tough.

 Farhan Artan

May be you are right Muslim women should NOT work side by side with men although I believe that is only Saudi culture. Women can work with men if they are dressed according to Islamic dressing code. However, The holly Quraan CLEARLY says that men are RESPONSIBLE of their women, including sisters, mothers, grandmothers and so on. Men MUST take care of their women, provide everything their women need. So do Somali men follow the holly Quraan and do what it says? No I dont think so. Somali men (including me) are the reason why our Somali women are suffering every corner in this world...Every refugee camps in this world there are women and children suffering in there. We Somali men are completely Failures. We let our women so down we humiliated and embarraced them in from of other women in this world.. Dont use Islam and accuse those women for working same factory with men when you as Somali man (including me) failed our morally and religious responsibility toward our Somali women!!! We Must fix ourselves first before we tell them what Quraan says about women... Wa-Billahi Towfeeq..

The safety of employees is a must -period. But the question is what is unsafe and how should you implement safety practices.

Choosing the human part in the system for being the unsafe and firing employees is very ridiculous.
Clearly something is wrong with either the plant’s processes to operate machinery, or your monster machines have problems: Where are safety guides for your floor sanitation machine? Where are the foul operation sensors to prevent unintended operation? Where is the emergency shutoff?
    fiqicigaal @ 6/6/2012 11:26 AM EST
I can see the pain in your eyes and I know no matter how hard you guys try to earn a living it is never enough for a lousy employer and they will always introduce some kind of policy perhaps to cover their back in case something goes wrong or some employee gets hurt and they are sued for negligence. Mind you, nowadays health and safety is something an employer cannot discard, they could be in deep sh*t if they do not play their cards right.
