Mogadishu (HOL) — A Somali National Army soldier was executed by firing squad in Abudwaq, Galgaduud region, after being convicted of premeditated murder, according to local court officials.

Mohamed Kafi Abdi was put to death after confessing to intentionally killing a man named Duran Jama Mohamed. His execution followed a court ruling in which Abdi requested to face the death penalty as retribution for the killing.

The execution was overseen by officials from the Galgaduud Regional Court, who reiterated that individuals convicted of deliberate murder would face the same fate under the law. The event underscores the enforcement of Islamic Sharia law in the region, which mandates the death penalty for those found guilty of murder.

So far this year, nearly ten people, including both civilians and soldiers, have been executed in Abudwaq following convictions for premeditated killings. The wave of executions stems from a decision by local elders to enforce Sharia law as a response to rising violent crime in the area.
