Mogadishu (HOL) — Somali government forces, backed by international allies, have conducted a successful strike resulting in the death of over 19 Al Shabaab militants in the Galgaduud and Middle Shabelle regions, the government announced today.

In a press statement, the Ministry of Information confirmed that the Somali National Army (SNA), with the assistance of international partners, carried out a two-pronged offensive targeting militant strongholds.

The first operation, which spanned more than 24 hours, took place in Geed Ma'arke, a village under the Ruunirgood district in Middle Shabelle. Militants had reportedly used this location to prepare for upcoming attacks. Somali forces moved in swiftly, killing 14 militants during the raid, the government stated.

The second operation targeted a checkpoint in EL Helle, where militants had been extorting travellers. During this engagement, five more Al Shabaab fighters were killed. In addition, Somali forces destroyed several military vehicles that had been seized by the militants, including an armoured truck known as "Abdi-Bilaha" and a water tanker.

The Ministry of Information noted that these operations reflect the government's ongoing commitment to eradicating the threat posed by Al-Shabaab militants. "The Somali National Army, in cooperation with brave Somali citizens and our international allies, will continue its efforts until the Khawarij are fully eliminated," the statement read.

The operations come as part of a campaign aimed at securing central Somalia, where insurgent activity has disrupted the lives of civilians for years. The government says its renewed push to destabilize militant networks is expected to continue with increased intensity in the coming weeks.
