Baidoa (HOL) — Gunmen armed with pistols shot and killed Yaqub Hassan Haji, a well-known traditional elder and peacemaker, in Baidoa, the capital of Somalia's Bay region, on Saturday night.
The attack occurred in the Bardale neighbourhood, with the perpetrators fleeing the scene before security forces arrived.
Local authorities launched an immediate operation, arresting several individuals in connection with the killing, though no group has yet claimed responsibility for the attack.
The family of the slain elder has called on the Southwest state authorities to investigate the killing and bring those responsible to justice thoroughly. Yaqub Hassan Haji's funeral is expected to take place in Baidoa today.
