Somali PM appoints State Minister for Foreign Affairs to oversee East Africa Community affairs

    Mogadishu (HOL) - Somali Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre appointed State Minister for Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Ali Mohamed Omar to be in charge of East Africa Community Affairs.

    A decree from the Office of the Prime Minister on Thursday did not clarify whether Omar will continue as the Minister of State in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs or if he has been removed from his ministerial position.

    Somalia was admitted into the East African Community (EAC) in 2023 after more than a decade of intense lobbying. The application process, initiated by former President Sharif Sheikh Ahmed in 2011, was long and arduous, with some member states allegedly hesitant to include Somalia.

    However, the process finally yielded results last year after the current president, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, appointed a special envoy to accelerate the admission process shortly after he assumed office for a second term in August 2022.
