Thursday June 27, 2024

Mogadishu (HOL) - Somalia's Cabinet of Ministers approved a resolution defining national security threats during their weekly meeting in Mogadishu on Thursday, chaired by Prime Minister Barre.

A statement from the meeting stated that the approved resolution consists of eight articles: terrorism, separatism, state fragility, open borders, foreign interference, climate change, cyber security risks, and social crisis risks.

The Somalia National Security Office prepared the resolution, which the government vehemently stated would shield the country from threats to its existence, governance, unity, and the unity of the Somali people.

The Office of the Prime Minister of Somalia emphasized that the resolution reflects the new vision of the Somali government based on national security. However, the office did not provide further details about the document.

The approval of the resolution comes as Somalia has faced diplomatic tensions and interference from neighbouring countries and other interests in the Horn of Africa over the last few years. Furthermore, last night, the Ethiopian government emphasized that it did not withdraw from the Red Sea agreement signed with the breakaway region of Somaliland earlier this year.

Ethiopia Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and Somaliland President Muse Bihi signed an MoU allowing Ethiopia sea access and a military base in exchange for potential recognition of Somaliland.
